I have also experienced this problem. Although, I can't even kill the
server with ctrl-alt-bksp.

I also can't quit X without the machine hanging. I have one of those
monitors that makes a clicking noise when it changes mode, and it never
switches back into text mode when I try to quit X. A solution would
be greatly appreciated, or even an idea as to where I can find a
solution myself (I suppose that would be better).
