I've been having a problem getting Xfree up and running, and surprisingly
problem doesn't seem to be one of the monitor (yet :-), but of the mouse.
I've got a Genius mouse hooked to com2, and it works properly on the
DOS partition. Here's the relevant messages I get when I run startx:
> XS3 Version-0.4.4/ X Window System
> Accelerated for S3 video adapters (Version 1.2 alpha-0.4)
> (protocol Version 11, revision 0, vendor release 5000)
> Mouse: type: Mousesytems, device: /dev/ttys1, baudrate: 1200
> ...
> Cannot open mouse: No such file or directory
>

> xinit: Invalid argument (errno 22): unable to connect to X server
> xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
I tried running /etc/syssetup and reconfiguring as a Microsoft serial
mouse (Genius can do either) and altering the Xconfig to correspond to
this (and holding down the middle button while starting X), but that
didn't help either. I got essentially the same set of messages.
Can anyone make any suggestions as to what I'm doing wrong? Does any
one out there have a Genius mouse working with XS3 or Xfree?
