I can't explain this, maybe someone can help me figure out what went
wrong:
our system can no longer access network functions (ping fails, ftp,
etc) even though I'm sure I didnt change any relevant files. I was
working with gettydefs and inittab to try and get a modem working.
Some time later I rebooted and found that I could not access the
network. I just about lost my mind trying to trace the problem, and
then I found that my original SLS bootdisk works (99pl6). That boot
disks boots, then reads everything else off the hardisk, and yet the
network works fine from that floppy disk. On the harddisk, booting
goes normally, but the network wont work.
I restored some backup kernels: no luck. I restored ALL of /etc from a
recent backup tape (when I could boot from the hardisk, and the
network worked fine) and it STILL doesnt work. Only from booting this
old floppy. The backup kernel from the tape boots fine when lilo
installs it. but still no network!
I tried making a boot floppy with a newer kernel (99-8) and that boots
ok; starts the net daemons: no network.
I find this really bizarre; perhaps someone can help me retrace my
steps and find out what went wrong. this just doesnt make sense. I
looked at the CMOS settings, and those seem fine; that's about the
only thing the tape couldnt back up. I checked out the soft settings
in the SMC ethernet card; and it looks fine; anyway, it works with
linux with this boot floppy and in DOS, but *not* from the kernel I
boot of the harddisk. efsck says the harddisk is ok.
thanks for any help. I dont know what to try next, except trash everything
and restore the tape (and the system worked then! linux 99-7A-ish)
