Subject: problems: getty_ps2.0.6b and mount-0.99.6
Date: 11 Apr 1993 00:09:17 GMT

Actually I upgraded to the DLL libc 4.3.3 at the same time as I installed
getty_ps2.0.6b and mount-0.99.6 so that may have something to do with the
following problems:

(and I upgraded to 0.99-8 at the same time too, gee)

With mount, I can no longer mount nfs filesystems. It was working great until
I changed to libc 4.3.3 and mount 0.99.6. I want to mount an nfs-exported
ext2 filesystem and I get the following errors with the following commands
(which worked fine before):

netone: /# mount 129.0.2.4:/ /galileo
mount: xiafs: unknown filesystem type

The actual remote filesystem type is ext2 (just like the root filesystem I am
trying to mount it on). So then I try:

netone: /# mount -t nfs 129.0.2.4:/ /galileo
nfs_read_super: missing data argument
mount: 129.0.2.4:/ already mounted/wrong fs type or /galileo busy

and it is not busy (I get the same error with any blank directory) and is
definitely not already mounted.

With getty from getty_ps 2.0.6b, everything is fine except on tty1 (the 1st
vc). After logging in normally and logging out, I can never log in again.
Getty runs fine and presents the login prompt, but after typing in my
password, I see the /etc/motd file and then that's it. running a "ps -ax"
shows that my shell is running unconnected to a terminal (the tty entry
says "?" when it should say "1").

These things are completely reproducible and quite annoying (especially the
lack of nfs). If anyone can offer me some advice or can see something that
I might possibly be doing wrong, please let me know.

Thanks,
David Nichols

pre-P.S. in addition to this other stuff I installed a couple of ethernet
cards.

P.S. I have also found that the network code acts really strangely for me,
it takes about one or two minutes before I can log in via telnet or rlogin,
or before the ftp prompt will show up. And then sometimes everything will
work right away. Other things like tftp, finger, and running X programs over
the network are instantaneous. I am running with 2 linux machines connected
via 2 ethernet cards.

P.P.S. I have been running Linux since last fall with no problems and I have
been extremely impressed with how stable Linux is, and now all of the sudden
I am getting wierd sudden lockups and strange tty behaviour and crappy
long network waits. But I still like Linux. a lot.

P.P.P.S. I also have been experiencing very strange behaviour all of the
sudden from xdm. Sometimes it will let me log in (after making me wait a few
fun minutes) and then it will nicely allow me to experience the joy of a
locked up computer. This doesn't happen with startx. Sometimes it will
not let me log in at all (even as root). The experience is hard to describe,
let me just say that it is really great.

P.P.P.P.S. Also I used to have a mod play in the background while setting up
my desktop from my .xinitrc, but the computer would lock up right after the
mod finished. Needless to say I quit playing mods in the background.
This is with the newest sound driver and tracker 3.6 (along with kernel
0.99-8).
