Subject: Newbie SCSI+OS2+>1GB drive install problems
Date: 8 Apr 1993 19:18:53

Hello. I've read the FAQ and gone through the last 1000+ messages here without
any help. I have a Maxtor 1.45GB hard drive (SCSI ID 0) with an Adaptec 1542b
SCSI controller and an IBM 3510 CD Rom drive (SCSI ID 3).

I have created the four SLS (?) disks A1-A4 dated March 26. I am able to
boot the first disk then mount the second without any problems. It finds my
Adaptec controller, Maxtor drive, and CD Rom drive without any problems,
however, fdisk says hda not found. I have tried many different devices for
fdisk, including the sd[a-e]x drivers.

I am currently running OS/2 2.1 (March beta) with the boot manager and
DOS 5.0.

My partitions are currently ordered as follows:

        Boot Manager
        DOS 182MB primary
(100MB unused space (I've experimented with different settings without
luck)). This is where I plan to put the Linux partition.
Extended partition broken up as follows:
                300MB DOS D: partition
                50MB OS/2 2.1 HPFS partition
                400MB OS/2 utility HPFS partition
                400MB OS/2 developement HPFS partition

I am familiar with running UNIX, but not installing it. I have read all of
the docs and can't seem to find the problem. It seems that Linux will not
access the hard disk.

I do not have an IDE drive installed, only the SCSI drive. The CMOS is set
to no hard drives, as is to be expected with my setup.

If this helps, the Adaptec controller reports that there are 1450 cylinders
total (greater than the DOS >1024 limit), but with OS/2 and HPFS this is not
a problem.

My other hardware is the following:
66MHz 80486 ISA motherboard with 20MB of RAM (I've tried installing
with 16MB as well with no luck)
STB Evolution SVGA (Cirrus Logic 5022 based board)
Adex 8514/A (Fully hardware compatible with the IBM)
        1 Parallel port
        2 Serial ports (COM 2 has a 16550a UART)
Mouse Systems mouse and BUS card (IRQ 5, port 338)
Gravis Ultrasound or Sound blaster (I've been experimenting with both).

My hardware works fine with OS/2 2.0 (with a couple of updated SCSI drivers)
and the 2.1 Dec beta and March beta.
