lockf() was never part of stock System V; it was an add-on in many actual
releases but wasn't part of the AT&T kernel, if I remember correctly.

Look in Linux's own /usr/include/unistd.h (from GNU libc):

   For unrecognized options, or options missing arguments,
   `optopt' is set to the option letter, and '?' is returned.
