XFree86 1.2 (The current version) works for dotclocks up to 40MHz, resolutions
up to about 800x600 (or slightly higher) may be used if you want a reasonable
flicker free image. Higher dot clocks will give a "snowy" image. You may not
use interlace modes.
XFree must be started from 80x25 character mode to get it to guess the clocks
right. The VESA timings may be used when you have got the clocks in the right
order.
XFree86 1.3 (The next release) will support the WD90C30, you should be able
to use all dotclocks and resolutions including interlaced modes with this
release, but there will not be any support for the accelerated features of
the WD90C31.
(XFree86 2.0 will probably support the WD90C31 accelerated features.)
BTW: comp.windows.x.i386unix is probably a better news group for this kind of
questions since comp.os.linux has so many postings that it's hardly readable.
