I guess I ought to post that I was able to get my system back up (YAY!!) :-)
The solution I used was to grab a copy of HJ Lu's bootable root disk and
mount from that. It saved my life -- thanks HJ! :-)

And thanks to everyone who responded in my hour of need! :-)
