Could some kind soul give me some tips on how to get speak to
compile? For the uninformed speak is a utility that translates
text into speech using a sound card.
Apparently, it won't compile right because there is some stuff
having to do with audio on a Sparc that Linux lacks. GCC croaks
when it tries to link something out of a library called libspeak.a.
This library is generated by GCC beforehand (Linux doesn't have
this particular library) so I figured that everything would compile
okay (it would find everything it needs in the library) but alas
this isn't the case.
BTW, how about making a speak device like the Amiga has for linux?
You could call it /dev/speak. To use it all you'd have to do is
cat out a file, redirect the output to the speak device, and then
the words in the file would be spoken. You could amaze your friends
by having your PC say something on bootup like: "Linux. The choice
of a Gnu generation." :) :) I can't wait till the T-shirts start
coming out!
