My machine does this also, at seemingly random times as well. i
can remember two of them clearly. Once was after I typed sync
followed by a carriage return three times in succession. (That's
(sync<CR>)*3 for the people who can't understand my wording) and
the other time was after I pressed the space key to continue a
<more> that I was in.

Any ideas?
