A good-sized group of people has formed locally to hash out the
details of running a residential home network in the New England
region. Several of us are running Linux and/or other flavors of Unix,
though the network itself proposes to handle Mac and Windows PCs as
well.
To gain more experience with running the store-and-forward portion of
this network (as opposed to the online portion, which will be on the
Internet and will probably cost money for SLIP access), I'm offering
during an "alpha" period personal UUCP feeds (free, of course) out of
my Somerville home until I saturate a phone line. This would include
email and up to say 1/2-hour a day of netnews (several dozen groups @
14.4Kbps). My system has been running since December without a crash,
so part of my goal is 99.9+% reliability on this network.
Write me if you want a UUCP feed for your Linux system. Write to
freenet-request@rkbhome.jti.com to join a discussion list talking about
the creation of a home network. (It's a pretty active list at this
point, so be prepared to get several messages daily.)
