Subject: Q: linux and foreign languages, X-Windows setup problems

I've got 2 big questions:
1) Is there a way for linux to support the german language; I mean:
  a) programs like groff,emacs,... not complaining about unknown characters,...
  b) readline accepting "Umlaute". (I know filename may contain any char. but
I cannot enter it on the prompt)
Is there any solution that can be applied quickly?
2) I installed SLS 0.99pl6 base system by doinstall.
Afterwards I installed x1-x10 with sysinstall.
Then I tried to find any information up-to-date.
   Then I played around with Xconfig. (I got a tvga8900c w. 1MB)
Then I started startx and it complained about not being able to init the
   core devices.

Anybody having an idea?

Please mail any suggestions to me.
