I've been using Linux for some month and had 2 crashes at all. Both times
Linux run out of memory. So I'd suggest not to run X under 16Mb virtual
memory. If you have 4 RAM + 12 swap or 8 RAM + 8 swap won't matter to much,
as long as You do one thing at a time, i.e. Your mouse won't response
well during compiles, but it is nevertheless usable

The new procps (propc05 ?) package contains xmem, which You might try.
Never run Linux without free memory, since demand loading of executables
might serve as swap but it is much more slower, then swapping out some
unused seldom used pages.
