From: jfrost@odaiko.cts.com (SYSTEM 0PERATOR) Subject: Stdin not in gzip format... Date: Fri, 02 Apr 1993 12:49:35 PST
I'm new to unix, and even newer to linux, so I would appreciate some
help with the following!
I have the SLS installation set of linux. I have a 250 MB HD, 45MB of
it is partitioned for linux, the rest is for dos.
I ran the installation utility DOINSTALL and everything proceeded as
"expected" except for the following error message "Installing lx99P6...
stdin is not in gzip format".
What does this mean? What is lx99P6?
Secondly, I created another user using the USERADD command (I specified
-A DEFAULT -m and the user name). I was able to logon as this second
user, but when I tried to run "mail" or "elm" to send mail to root, the
programs both reported that they could not create the
/usr/spool/mail/jfrost.lock file (jfrost is the id of the user) and
then terminated. Similarly, when root sent mail to jfrost, jfrost was
unable to read the mail. What am I not doing? Or is there a bug in
the linux code?
Thanks in advance.
Julian
(ps. Anyone else noticed that you can't use SHUTDOWN, it just gives the
usage each time you try to invoke it.)
