Here is the table of S3 dot clocks taken from the S3 GUI Accelerator
Manual for the 86C928:

        0 25.175 VGA0
        1 28.322 VGA1
        2 40.000 VESA 800x600@60HZ
        3 Reserved
        4 50.000 VESA 80x600 @ 72HZ <-- I use this one
                        640x480x16bpp @ 60HZ
        5 77.000 1024x768 @ 72HZ <-- I use this one, too
        6 36.000 VESA 800x600 @ 56HZ
        7 44.889 1024x768 @43HZ Interlaced
        8 Reserved
        9 Reserved
        A 80.000 1280x1024 @46HZ Interlaced
        B 31.500 VESA 640x480 @ 72HZ <-- I use this one
        C 110.000 1280x1024 @ 60HZ
        D 65.000 1024x768 @ 60HZ
        E 75.000 1024x768 @ 70Hz
                        640x480x24bpp @ 60Hz
        F Reserved

My Artist Graphics Winsprint 100+ card actually has a 924 chip on it,
but using the entries for 4, 5, and B got very nice, solid displays.
I used vgaset to get the other timings right.

The monitor is an Acer Flexscan AcerView 56L 15".

Hope this is of some help.
