32-bit OSes are very sensitive to RAM timing differences. Neither Linux nor
OS/2 2.0, for example, can cope with mixed 9-chip and 3-chip SIMMs. OS/2 can
handle slower RAM, apparently, but Linux pushes the hardware just that extra
bit harder so that it fails.
