Subject: Can't swap using Adaptec 1542B controller ..
Date: 1 Apr 1993 08:02:08 GMT

Hi SCSI-experts.

I have looked in the Linux FAQ, read the doc's that came with my hardware and
asked my local Guru's, but I still have this problem:

Since I installed my new Adaptec 1542B SCSI-controller my system won't
swap at all. A week ago (when I still was using my Seagate ST-02 controller)
everything was fine. Well not everything: Sometimes the system seemed to hang
and then suddenly things worked again - the reason for bying the 1542B :-)
But swapping seemed to work with the ST-02.

Back in the "old" days I could do a "make dep clean disk" in 27 minutes, which
is OK for me, but now - because the bastard won't swap - it can't even do a
"make dep clean" in 30 minutes.

I'm using the 1542B with the factory default settings:
SCSI address: 7
SCSI parity: Enabled
DMA channel: 5
IRQ channel: 11
AT port addr: 330h
AT BIOS addr: DC000H, enabled
BIOS waitstate: 0, disabled
FD controller: enabled, DMA req 2, IRQ 6, dual spped disabled
Autosense: Enable

I have made a swap-partition using fdisk and made a swap-image (using mkswap)
Then i did "swapon /dev/sda3" and the system responded something like:
"Adding swap space: 16384 bytes".
After this I went to /usr/src/linux to build the kernel.
Everything looks fine, until there is no more "real" memory left and it is
time to start using some of the swap-space. Then nothing happens !! The system
slows down and still don't use the swap at all.

My machine is a 25 MHz 386, with a 387, 8 Mb RAM.
My disk is a Micropolis (15 heads, 54 sectors/track, 1626 cyl.)
I have a WD8003 ethernetcard on IRQ 5, I/O address 280h, BIOS address CA000h

If this is a FAQ, I'm sorry to waste your time - but as I said: I asked my
local Guru's first :-)

Please answer directly via E-mail (I can't wait til the news arrive)
