VGA+hercules can work, but I think this is limited to VGA graphics and mono text
8514+VGA should work, whether X has been configured for this is anyone's guess.
XGA+VGA propably would work, maybe even multiple XGA cards.
XGA-2 *will* work, the hardware is speced so that multiple XGA-2 cards can live
together. currently IBM, Radius and some OEMs are selling XGA-2 cards, they
are around $300-$500 (probably less for OEM ones). Now, writing drivers for
X is another matter. but at least you know the hardware will work and is
an upgradable standard. XGA-2 is accelerated, on par with a ATI graphics ultra
pro type card, in terms of speed, color and resolution.
I dont know whether the ATI or S3 cards can handle multiple monitors.
