Okay. Here's one for Linux.hardware.FAQ (I have been considering working
on such a beast, so mail me if you are interested in getting your input
in-put!)

I have a Future Domain TMC-1670 16bit SCSI controller. I have an HP97544SF
SCSI hard drive (~400mb, firmware revision B094) that doesn't work.

I have been told by a techie at HP that "...oh - you're not using an
Adaptec controller? No wonder the drive doesn't work..." Okokok. Forego the
obvious - the drive _should_ work on any SCSI controller, but HP won't talk
to me unless I scrap my FD and buy Adaptec.

I have been quoted a price on the AHA-1542 of $299. That seems a bit steep,
but maybe it _is_ extra special!

1) What Adaptec controller should I look for, and what should I expect to
   spend on it?
2) Any reason why my HP drive won't work? It responds to the SCSI_INQUIRY
command with manufacturer (HP), model (97544S -- got truncated!),
revision (B094), SCSI Version (01), but chokes on the total size
   question.

If you have any advice, or just want to gripe about how much HP charges for
their technical support, e-mail me (jmsimon@acsu.buffalo.edu). For those of
you who attempted to help me before -- the system I work on had a major
/var/spool/mail wipeout, and I lost all of your messages. Please don't take
this as a personal affront ;^)

        Thanks much for your help...
