Unless you are a professional typesetting expert, you will be able to produce
better looking output with TeX than with Xpress or Framemaker. Reason: TeX
macro packages provide you with built-in expertise in the fine art of type-
setting, whereas a WYSIWYG DTP program allows you only to break all the rules
of quality publishing. (As any publisher will be glad to tell you: the advent
of DTP has multiplied the percentage of bad & ugly publications out there.)
To the person who said that he admired those who wrote 500 page theses using
TeX: I have spent many hours teaching undergraduate students how to write
their theses using Microsoft Word, and have dispaired at the results (despite
the fact that they keep telling me that I'm a great teacher.) I'm convinced
that a good thesis macro package for LaTeX and 2 hours of instrution would
produce far better results than 4 hours of instruction in MS Word.
