I would like to thank the kind souls that responded to my request
of previous postings about Maxtor HD timeout and reset problems. Since
my posting, I have received quite a few requests from other potential
or current Maxtor users for those responses as well. Since I am quite busy
these days, I can't respond to each of you, really sorry. I have to post
the email I received here (sorry to folks who do not have such problem).
My machine is Micron Magnum 486/DX33 with 213Mb HD, 8Mb memory. The Maxtor
PCBA (sp ?) no. is S79A which I called Micron to find out (so 63A may not be
the magic no.). The HD will time out and reset when I load SLS from floppy
to HD. The installation will fail when this happens. I solve this problem
by using the turbo button to slow down the machine. First install the
minimum system (a1-a4). Then install the whole thing. Although the HD
still have the same problem, but it is not as severe. Even though the
installation fails, I managed to get SLS installed. I have not tried to
read and write heavily to the HD in linux yet, but so far the os looks
good. My friend guess is that the BIOS may not the right one for time
sharing os. DOS does not have any problem at all.

Again sorry to take some bandwidth. Thank all that responded. I may miss
someone, but you know whom I am talking about :). I hope this is of
general interest.
