Subject: applying patches to kernel source question

i am attempting to compile a new version of linux using GCC 2.2.2d.
Before i go to 0.97.2, i am trying to recompile 0.97.1 (which I
already have) in a an effort to get a feel for the process.

First, where might i find the patch command? i have an old one
from binar095.tar.Z that used to be on tsx-11 but has subsuquently
been erased.

Second, how do I apply the patches?? If i do a 'patch<patch1'
for example it asks me for a filename for each hunk.

thanx in advance
