I originally responded to this thread saying that adding more memory would
solve the problem. Not so. I had not done enough testing at the time I
made that statement. This time, however, I think I may have found a solution
(at least for me).
I did as someone else suggested and turned off external caching. As far as
I can tell, this solves the problem. But this is not a good solution to
the problem. I compiled the kernel (0.97pl5) and tried it out. Again, no
problem. What I neglected to do on all the previous compiles was add -m486
to the CFLAGS (I'm not used to do that all the time yet).
I thought that perhaps since I was running a 486, that it might make a
difference. Apparently so. I turned the caching back on and everything
seems to be working great. I compiled stuff (mostly the kernel) for about
and hour and a half and I never once got an internal compiler error.
I want to do some more testing in the next few days and also take out some
of the memory and see if that affects it. Hopefully this insight will help
those who are having the same problem.
