the files in question are in fact parts of a larger file which was split to
facilitate transfer on 1.44Mb disks. (The fonts files are three parts of a
larger file.) They can be put back together using:
cat xbin2.0.TZ#? >xbin2.0.T.Z
cat xfonts2.0.TZ#? >xfonts2.0.T.Z
or untarred directly using
cat xbin2.0.TZ#? | uncompress -c | tar xvf -
cat xfonts2.0.TZ#? | uncompress -c | tar xvf -
