To refresh: I was trying to install ISC2.2.1, DOS, and Linux on
the same disk. I had DOS in the 1st partition, Linux in the 2nd,
the 3rd was extended with DOS and Linux partitions. I was trying
to reinstall ISC in the 4th partition (after ISC started panicing
at boot: can't mount root). The install went ok until it attempted
to 'mkfs /' when it stops saying 'FATAL ERROR Can't create file system'
or some such.

After a lot of dead ends I tried changing the type of the extended
partitions from Linux(0x81 and 0x82) to DOS(0x4 and 0x6) and it WORKS!!!
Fortunately Linux doesn't care what the partition type is.

So why does ISC care what the extended partition types are?
Sounds like over-engineering to me. bahh!
