I haven't been keeping up with Linux lately (the last time I ran it
was 0.96b!). After watching Windows crash for the !(*#$(*'th time this
week, I decided to switch to an all-Linux system.
Having made this rash decision, I proceeded to FTP to tsx-11, and
found...confusion! I found the latest boot image (0.97.5 in
packages/GCC), root image, GCC 2.2.2d, and X11 2.0.
My questions are these:
1. I'd like to use the SLS distribution for mail, UUCP,
utils, etc. Which shared libraries does SLS use?
2. Would it be easier to just install SLS first and then
install the new kernel?
3. I saw a huge thread about GCC 2.2.2d and installation
problems, but didn't read it as I wasn't running Linux
at the time. What's the story?
4. Does x11v2.0 require the 4.1 jump tables? What else
requires them?
5. I've seen several references to BBS packages ported to
Linux (e.g. Mbox, XBBS, etc.) but none of them seem to
be on FTP sites. Could people working on this stuff
send me some mail?
I'm sorry to sound like such a newbie, but it's been months since
I played with Linux at all. I miss hacking the kernel source. :-)
