Help !!!!

I have gotten all the files for GCC2.2.2d and dumped them to my Harddisk.
When I run the install.generi It fails. with many errors. Basically I need to know what I need to install GCC 2.2.2 in my 97.1 linux system. I want to upgradeto pl5 but without a compiler it's kinda impossible. Help mail me if you like I just want the compiler installed.
