Actually, the DOS emulator has little to do with the kernel (other than
having the necessary functions included, such as vm86 which already
exists). There is a pre-alpha DOS emulator already.

As for the independent VC idea, I too, would add my voice to that. I
was impressed by a friends rs6000 as he toggled between VC's, one of
which was in text mode, and TWO of which were running two separate,
independent copies of X-Windows! (Actually, being able to flip out of
X to a text terminal would be handy).

Since I lack the knowhow, I won't be able to contribute this myself :(,
but would like to add my support for the idea :). BTW - joel, where is
the code to which you referred. If I get time between thesis writing
and installing X-stuff on our suns I may give it a crack anyway.
