My reasons for using LILO instead of DOS+bootlin
a) it's a hell of a lot faster
b) I can have more flexible configurations (I now have entries
for the most recent kernel with root=/dev/hdb2, the most
recent kernel with root=floppy, the previous version with
root=/dev/hdb2, the previous version with root=floppy, and DOS.
c) my linux stuff and DOS stuff are completely seperate (no
copying images of the kernel onto my DOS partitions)
d) problems with bootlin not zero'ing BSS (or something similar),
which LILO does.
e) I don't like DR DOS's config.sys configuration stuff and don't
want to register AutoCon when LILO is free.
Since I boot DOS so rarely, I see no reason to have to ever boot into
DOS, even just to bootstrap Linux, especially since that adds another
step for errors to appear.
LILO is very easy and safe to use, if you simply follow the directions.
