I just compiled the 0.97.4 kernel at home. After booting it starts complaining
that my root fs is read-only (?!). That causes /etc/mtab, /etc/utmp not to be
created and some more mischief (use your imagination.. :) ). 0.97.2 works
great (still does..).

Anyone has any idea what is going on??

P.S. I installed the newest and greatest mount/umount/swapon/swapoff (for
     0.97.3) so the problem probably is *not* an old mount program..
