Thank you for this excellent description of the problem.
I've experienced this problem and am working on it. I don't
have anything yet to report, but I have a few very good ideas
as to what is causing this problem. I'll let you know the
status of things when I know more.
For those of you experiencing this problem, I don't have a good
temporary solution except to not use anything beyond 0.97.pl1
until I can come up with something else. I use CTRL-ALT-BACKSPACE
to exit the server and CTRL-C to exit xinit/startx, but I've
heard reports that this doesn't always work.
Again, I _am_ working on it and expect a fix in the next few days.
