Linus has already discussed the HD timeout problem, but there are a
couple of other issues here:
The extended file system is included in the MCC interim distrubution.
The commands are on the comp2 disk (mkefs, efsck), and they are from
efsprogs7 (unless you got a very early comp2 disk, in which case they
are from efsprogs6). I decided not to make these commands accessible
at boot time to discourage ordinary installers from using the extended
file system as their default, and partially because of the size of the
efsck program. This is still alpha test software, although very stable,
and the efsprogs7 release, which appeared the day MCC interim 0.97p2
was released, corrects serious bugs in the earlier version.
In short, the extended file system is already part of MCC interim Linux
at release 0.97p2, but you should use it with caution, especially if,
as someone said recently, you don't enjoy having problems and fixing
them. This is not a criticism of the extended file system, which is
being written very well.
With respect to X11, the version 1.1 which can be found at most Linux
ftp sites requires libraries from the previous release of gcc, which are
not included in the x11 files or in MCC interim Linux release 0.97p2.
This is awkward unless (1) you already have X11 working, or (2) you
don't mind waiting. The new version of X11 will be out soon and will
not require you to have old libraries.
