Maybe in a "DOS user's guide to using the Linux system". This is really
just a newbie question and we shouldn't punish experienced Unix and
Linux users with such stuff by putting it in a regular Linux FAQ. There
are plenty of published guides for new users, but there is no law against
making a free one. Just be sure it stays separate from the regular Linux
stuff so we experienced users can ignore it. :-)
Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to discourage DOS users from switching
to Linux. It's just that some of us are experienced users and get
irritated with what we think are "stupid" questions. A classic example
is "How do I remove a file?" Really, there are other newsgroups that
have that purpose.
I can see that we need a DOS-to-Linux mailing list channel or a
DOS-to-Linux guru for the new breed of Linux user that we are increasingly
seeing. Between having a DOS-to-Linux guru, mailing list channel, and
seperate FAQ, we should be able to satisfy the majority of Linux users.
Previous postings from newbies have resulted in long, dragged out threads
on splitting the newsgroup. I think we CAN keep this newsgroup together
if we DO SOMETHING about the newbie problem, because it's only going
to get worse if we don't.
Comments? Suggestions?
