Subject: BUG: fdisk can make invalid extended partitions
Date: Thu, 29 Oct 1992 15:34:01 GMT

Under some circumstances, the fdisk distributed with SLS 0.98 can
create invalid extended partitions.

This bug is tickled by (1) allocating an area for the extended
partition, and then (2) creating a partition within the area which
does _not_ begin on the first cylinder of the area.

The result of the bug is that the extended partitions begin on head
zero, while extended partitions should begin on head one. (Head
numbers can be seen with the "p" command from the "x"pert menu.)

As a workaround: "Well, don't do that, then." Always begin extended
partitions at the lowest possible cylinder number.
