There is currently no attempt to detect serial mice in the kernel. You just
have to be sure that /dev/mouse points to the proper serial port for your
setup. To detect a serial mouse requires having a short conversation with
it; witness the problems between the multi-serial I/O detection code and some
of the SCSI adapters.

The philosophy that I've adopted is that the kernel detects the I/O hardware
(such as serial PORTS, parallel ports and busrodents (there's a port installed))
and not what's attached to the hardware.
