Subject: lilo & os/2, reboot is broken
Date: Wed, 28 Oct 1992 07:06:12 GMT

Hello linuxers !

Earlier I had seen a post requesting how to install lilo to work with
the os/2 boot manager. Here is what I did - please let me know
if this is not apropriate & post a correction. It seems to be
working fine.

Assuming you have OS/2's boot manager already installed....

First, I ran '/etc/lilo/lilo -b /dev/fd0 -v -v -v -v /Image' from
the command line. (you must have a blank, formatted disk in drive a).

When I tried to boot linux from this floppy everything worked fine.

Then I typed '/etc/lilo/lilo -b /dev/hda6 -v -v -v -v /Image' from
the command line. (the -v's just increase the verbosity).

I then typed 'sync' & rebooted. No problems - lilo boots linux
without a hitch.

The only catch is that ever since 'reboot' gives me a 'broken pipe'
and doesn't work. It creates '/etc/nologin', which prevents anyone
but root from logging in. Sync still works, but I'd like to have
reboot back. Did I cause this problem with lilo or is this a symptom
of something else?

BTW - I have abandoned OS/2, which I paid precious dollars for, for
an operating system that was written by a 22 year old computer science
student. Its no suprise at all that this Linus fellow has done a hell of
a job - better than anything MicroShaft has done in years. What has got
me amazed is that he's even shown up IBM in producing a great operating
system in record time (okay, he didn't work alone, everyone deserves
credit that has done any FSF work). I bought OS/2 for its stability
and compatibility. Hmmm, how does one measure the magnatude of
compatibility? Running Microsoft Windows products and Dos products, plus
FSF ports to OS/2 - wow. I'm sure it took a lot of effort, but come on.
Being able to run windows products just doesn't turn my crank anymore, not
when the entire world of unix has been made available.

Being able to run software written for a dead & dying operating
system & hardware architecture is not my idea of compatability. Its what
I call stagnant.

And don't even think Windows NT. Hehe. The thought makes me giggle...

Linus - please don't ever go to work for a big corporation. Start your
own company, consult, do anything but get lost in the coorporate sea of
unproductivity. The world needs your mind alive ....
