Subject: starting and stopping xdm

Xdm is great. My computer really looks like an X server now.
I am new to xdm and have a couple of questions...

How should I start xdm? I use X *almost* allways when I am running
Linux. It would be best if when I turn on my machine, I get the
xdm login screen. Where (how) should I invoke xdm? Should I
put it in rc.local? Should it run in the background somehow?
(I am really quite clueless - sorry).

Next, what if I do want to exit X for a while (say before shutting
down the system or whatever). How do I get out of xdm? I tried
killing the xdm process with 'kill' and got pretty ugly results.
What is the politically correct way to shut down xdm?

Many thanks.
