Does the keyboard work for you under X normally? If not, it sounds as if
you have the /dev/console settings incorrect. I don't remember off hand what
they should be, but they were wrong in one release I know. Email if that
is the case, and I will look them up. It could also be /dev/tty.

As far as xdm goes, it sounds as if something isn't set up correctly in
its config files. In /usr/X386/lib/X11/... there are the files to modify.
