I did it and guess what? It works. I remade with rawrite my floppies at
work, went home and started installation from scratch. All floppies write
protected just in case except the HJ rootdisk (but I took 2 copies of it).
Everything worked as it should have. I did not see a glitch. I had it
running 9 hours last night.

I don't know what happened, so I don't know how to prevent it in the
future. At least I know neither my hardware nor Linux are terminally
broken or incompatible. I seriously suspect my appliances. I made sure
that neither the clothes washer not the dish washer were working.
The fact that all those problems happened during a weekend might suggest
electrical power problems too. I live in a second-residence area, not
very populated during on workdays but with many more people during
the weekend.
