From: rob@netcom.com (Robert Rogers) Subject: Linux (not *nix) newbie needs help with rdev and friends Date: Sun, 25 Oct 1992 21:35:48 GMT
I'm not a *nix newbie, but I'm a Linux newbie, and I need a little help.
I've recently installed the 0.98p1 version of SLS and I like it very much.
I boot from the floppy, and I'll keep it that way 'till LILO gets stable.
I've been trying to rebuild my kernel and I'm having trouble with rdev.
System is:
386-40, 4MB Ram, Mono VGA, Logitech BusMouse, a:=1.2M 5.25, b:=1.44M 3.5
Disk: IDE 120MB
~50MB Dos (hda1), 4M Swap (hda2), 4M /tmp (hda3), ~60MB Linux (hda4)
I def'd ROOT_DEV =# /dev/hda4 in the Makefile and tried that.
When I boot with the dd'd floppy, it asks me to put in the "root floppy".
So, I did 'rdev Image /dev/hda4 /' on it, and it wouldn't even load.
I tried different settings, but no luck.
Any help would be great! It seems I'm stuck if I can't update my kernel.
The kernel README says just to 'rdev the new Image'. No help there.
Also, I did a 'ps -U', got an error, and now ps gives me
lseek kmem: Unknown error 93054566
even with the stock kernel. That should teach me to screw around with a
working system. 'free' didn't show my swap (but Linux did at boot).
On a side note, is there a way to use the 43/50 line modes in my vanilla
VGA? The SVGA modes don't do didily. I know the monitor is capable of it
(in DOS, yuc).
P.S. I tried the frag.c posted recently - now that I've found that my disk
is trashed, how do I fix it with Linux tools?
P.P.S.S. Thanks TONS to Linus and the whole gang for saving me from getting
Destiny, or (gasp) Solaris, just to get a Real Computer at home. The computing
world is in your debt. Lets hope you put USL(tm) in the dirt.
