- Instead of making you all read the thread, I'll just ask simply:
1). I want a unix system on my 386/33 8M-ram, 210Mb HD (with lots of DOS
crap on it), both floppies, AMI bios, you know, your typical semi-cheap
clone. I _have_ had, on other systems, Coherent 3.2 and 4.0, and Esix 4.0
and Xenix (god, who cares?).
2). I need to be able to access some DOS stuff, but want to operate
from the Unix/Linux/**x environment.
3). Being able to connect to the Net, as I do now via a DOS term program
and a 9600 v.32bis/v.42bis, 9600FAX-blah-blah-blah modem is
IMPERATIVE. I never was able to do much with Coherent, except use
the kermit to connect to my Unix host system, but transferring files
was a nightmare. I want to use sz if possible.
4). I can live without X, but would like to have it to play and learn
if possible. What does it take to install, compile and run X11 on
Linux?
5) See No. 3: Is there software out there that'll let me to some
telecom, read mail, upload and download files, and read news, that
is available on linux? Can it be installed-configured by a lesser
individual than a _wizard?
I don't expect people to reply or follow up over and over on the
net. I would like some email suggestions, and I'm sure in many
cases there would be interest along the net vis a vis answers
to my questions.
I'll summarize if anyone thinks it'd be worthwhile. In the meantime,
those of you who happily pound away on your linux system, pls. think
of me as a disenfranchised brother who needs your advice (--****--).
Thanks to all,
Paul Pershing
