I seem to have fixed my memory problems. I'm not really sure what the
cause was and what exactly solved the problem. What follows is a
description of the process I went through in trying to identify the
problem.

My Gateway 386-33 came with 4 1Mx9 80 ns SIMMs. In June, I purchased
4 1Mx3 70 ns SIMMs along with a memory expansion card M710. I put the
1x3's on the mother board and the 1x9's in bank 1 of the mem.
expansion card.

With this configuration, I was never able to compile the kernel.
Something always died in the middle. And it seemed to happen at
random.

In order to determine whether the old mem., new mem, or the expansion
card was the problem I did the following:

1) attempt to compile kernel:
        orignal mem. on mother board
        no expansion card

   kernel compiled correctly

2) attempt to compile kernel:
with new mem. on mother board,
        no expansion card

   kernel compiled correctly

3) attempt to compile kernel:
with new mem. in bank 0 on mem. expansion card
old mem. in bank 1 on mem. expansion card

   kernel compiled correctly

This is where I stopped. I have had no further indications of the
problem, and have been running X, and even compiled under it.

Thanks to all for their help and suggestions.
