Subject: X11 'fixed font' problem solved.
Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1992 11:04:55 GMT

I've seen that quite a few people had also problems getting the
X11 SLS distribution up and running. The fix is trivial, but
it took me some time to find it 8-).

The main problem is that the fonts have to be in a compressed format.
This caused some clever people (like me) to go to the font directories
and compress everything that is in them. Now this caused another problem...

For a working font directory you need 3 type of files in that directory:

1) All font type files have to be compressed (*.*.Z).
2) a "fonts.dir" file in a NOT COMPRESSED form. If missing do
a 'mkfontdir'. Without this file you get a server error
telling you that the server couldn't set the directory
   '/usr/lib/X11/fonts/misc'.
3) a "fonts.alias" file in a NOT COMPRESSED form. Without this file
you get the 'could not find fixed font' error.

Hope this helps
