ok. look- i see this same sarcastic flame every time there is disagreement
with creating a new group. "why don't we have one big newsgroup," it
is asked sarcastically. great. hurray.
there is obviously a lot of disagreement about this; and I would suspect
that majority of people will vote against splitting it- for myself, I don't
care. I read every single message that is posted to comp.os.linux, if only
to read the first few lines. I have a modern threaded newsreader (trn)
but I am an old fashioned sorta guy. Besides, I always reserve hope that
there will either be something interesting an otherwise non-redeeming thread
or that somebody will ask a question that I can help them with. So, I will
continue to read every group when (if) they are created.
But many people will be extremely inconvenienced by this split-up. Those
who have gated the group to Fido, as well as tso, who runs the mailing list.
Let us not Volunteer the Effort of Others. Especially those who work
so hard as it is.
Let us also not forget that the point of this group, IMHO is the furthering
of the free operating system called Linux. If the group is split it will
be more difficult to do this for reasons that have been present before.
So it is a bad idea.
But I am not one for squelching democracy. So, if you believe the group
should be split, issue a Call for Votes. If it is beaten than that will be
an end to the discussion, which would be a Good Thing (brief thought: how
much of the col traffic is taken up by this thread?).
Bottom Line: Put up or shut up. , Since it is obvious that
you can't be persuaded that it is a bad idea, Call the vote.
