In article <Oct.21.00.40.27.1992.7567@athos.rutgers.edu> you write:
:
: NOT ALL SIMMs ARE ALIKE!!
:
That is basically true, but I would rather say it's related
to design flaws of the motherboard (to tight timings),
or to the specification about the required RAM access time
70ns they say, but then only certain manufacturers RAMs will work.
(60ns might do, but I haven't checked that.)
I had these problems with my motherboard, and it was definitely
not a problem of the SIMMs (NEC 70ns), but of the motherboard.
I checked the SIMMs in another motherboard with the same chipset
(Symphony chipset) and had the same error.
Then I tried the SIMMs in a motherboard with a different chipset (UMC),
and had no problems at all. My ultimate check for SIMM compatibility
is OS/2 2.0 ! Boot it from the installation disk with Parity check
enabled in the Advanced Setup. If it dies with a Parity Error early
on the second disk, then you will have to get other RAM.
If you get a trap during the second disk, then probably you did
not have parity checking enabled. If you get to the welcome screen,
then you RAM should be ok.
I have posted a related article here about 2 weeks ago (I think).
