I just installed X11 via the SLS distribution on my 486-33 (4Mb) with a
WD90c30 based card and most things are fine, if a little slow. Can anyone
answer these questions for me, they don't appear to be in the FAQ.

1. X is slow and jumpy. Is this because I only have 4Mb ? I plan to
upgrade to 16Mb. Will this cure the jumpiness ?

2. How do I preview 'groff -mgs' files under X. Do I need some kind of
TeX dvi viewer ? Where can I find such a beast ?

3. X starts OK but reports an error: "Creating TCP socket: Invalid
argument on startup". When installing the SLS base files UUCP gave
errors and presumably didn't install. Is this the problem ?

4. emacs uses the xterm window that it is invoked from, ie. not its
own window, and it doesn't read my .emacs file. This causes the
        cursor keys not to work.

5. (Not an X question). I tried hooking up my 386SX notebook via a
null modem cable to the 486. I adjusted the /etc/inittab file to
what I hoped was correct. Then I loaded Windows 3.1 Terminal on
the notebook and booted Linux on the 486. Nothing happened. Not
a single character appeared at either end. Any ideas ? Is a null
modem cable OK ? What about parity, stop bits, data bits etc ? This
would solve my problem of having to get out of bed to log in to
        Linux !!

Replies via e-mail would be most gratefully received.

Thanks in advance,

Andy. (asb@cs.nott.ac.uk)
