Hi all...
It would seem that there are either one of two things that have gone
wrong with this version of the kernel:
1) it has become picky.
You see, i took a stock at/io card and replaced the
16450 with the 16550A (by desoldering the old one and replacing it).
that shouldn't cause any problems since they are intended to be pin
compatible. Is special hardware on the io card required for the
16550A uart)? All kernels (since the replacement) have stated that
I have /dev/ttys1 as a 16450 and /dev/ttys2 as a 16550A. Well now
i'm getting /dev/ttys0 as a 16550A, /dev/ttys1 as a 16450 and
/dev/ttys12 (???) as a 8650??? What on earth is that? ;) So, if the
kernel now has become "picky" that i've got a 16550a in a 16450 slot,
i can simply buy a *real* 16550a socketed at/io card and be done
with it.
or
2) It has some error in it's serial handling.
What actually has gone sour is that now I can no longer access the modem.
I have played with the serial port config, and it's not a speeed, stop bit,
or parity problem. Actually it's kinda hard to describe what I'm getting
as response to my typing. It's basically givimg me half of the characters
echoed and the other half are thrown into the bit-bucket in the sky. The
modem isn't ever receiving any of these to my knowledge...
Any insight into the problem would be helpful. I'm going to test more
thorougly the problem in the next two days...
