From: krouth@etcs03.eld.ford.com (Kevin C. Routh) Subject: SLS install problems... Date: Thu, 15 Oct 1992 11:16:47 GMT
I downloaded SLS 0.98 from tsx-11.mit.edu yesterday and took it home.
These files include the recently announced updates (0.98p1). I had
several problems during the installation which I would like to find out
are normal or abnormal.
First off, I wiped my previous installation using mkfs /dev/hda2 35190.
I wanted to install into a clean disk partition to prevent problems
which might occur from older files existing.
(1) The lx98.taz file wouldn't install because it needs to install
into /usr/src/linux and a previously installed file created a
link in /usr/src which is linux->/usr1/src/linux. The
problem is that /usr1 and /usr1/src directories were NOT
created beforehand, therefore an error from the tar. I
created them manually and tar xzvf'ed the lx98.taz files
manually afterward.
(2) Some of the uucp files did not install either. I believe
there were three of them. The rest installed OK.
(3) When using the menu program to uninstall some unneeded files,
it could not find the file sysinstall. I found it elsewhere
and moved it to the correct location.
(4) The passwd program does not allow passwords of over 8
characters. This is inconsistent with the 0.96c MCC version
I previously had installed.
I basically can hack my way around these problems but I did want to find
out if these problems are normal and if anybody else saw the same
behavior. E-mail or posting responses are fine.
I am impressed with Linux thus far and plan to install the xfree-86
release next to try out with my Trident 8900c card. If all goes well, I
plan to invest in a LARGE second hard drive exclusively for Linux.
THANKS!
