Subject: Problems with Xfree86 V1.1 and Adaptec 1542
Date: Wed, 14 Oct 1992 11:09:20 GMT

Hello!

I recently installed Linux on two computers (a 16MHz 386 with RLL-Controller
and a 33MHz 386 with Adaptec 1542 SCSI-Host Adapter, both 8MB Systems).
I use Linux 0.98pl1 with TCP/IP (which works ok).
I do now have two problems:

Xfree86 V1.1 (binary distribution from tsx).
I have a Trident 9000 VGA Card, 512K Video memory, Chipset Revision 0x23
(as reported bei X386).
The 256 color Server does not run, it says my chipset is not supported
(ok, this is not a 8900c, so i could expect it).

The monoserver (X386mono) comes up right, even in 800x600 mode. startx
opens the xterms, xclock. I can use my mouse (Mousesystems) and move windows
etc. So everything is fine. But: the server accepts no keyboard input, not even
ctrl-alt-bs to shut down. I traced this problem down to tty_read, which
always returns an EIO error to the Server, because the tty does either
ignore SIGTTIN or is "orphaned" (in tty_read_chan, file tty_io.c).
The keyboard does correctly produce interrupts and the scancodes are queued.
So it seems to me that the server has problems with its controlling tty.
I do not have the space to get the source code for Xfree86 up.
If anybody has a fix or knows the problem, i would be glad :-)

Second:
The Adaptec driver works fine, except one thing:
reading is as fast as i like it, but if i write some moderate sized files
(e.g. by linking the kernel) and then doing a sync, my machine hangs for
about 5-8 seconds. Is this what i have to tolerate? It seems to me
that the driver has some problems writing to the harddisk.
Is this a known bug or am I on my own? Are there some tunables i could
adjust (sorry, i am in no position to debug the driver or even further
trace my problem :-).

any help is appreciated,
  Tilman
