I followed the intructions and it worked. I presume you are setting the
Linux partition as active. My DOS 3.3 FDISK was not very collaborative
but, at least, I could change the active partition to Linux and then
boot from it. To go back to DOS I used the Linux fdisk included to
set the DOS partition to active. Here I got caught twice because a
feature in Linux fdisk that lets you set as active more than one
partition. My machine does not boot after that. Also I seem to remember
that my FDISK would not let me set as active a logical partition
inside the extended partition. I had to drop the extended partition
and the DOS FDISK would not let me create another regular partition,
so I completed partitioning with the Linux fdisk. DOS FDISK would
then let me set it active, though it did not let me create it in
the first place.
Then I got the LILO docs and configured it to boot either. There are
many options in LILO and I don't really understand all of them.
I have not had any problem ever since. LILO is great! Now I boot
MSDOS as default, but my home machine will work the other way
round. I have the Linux partition as active.
I think my problems were caused by limitations in my BIOS. I don't
consider them to be Linux related. If you have Linux on an extended
partition and your machine won't let you boot from it (as seems to
be my case), you can use some of the alternative methods described
in the LILO docs so that LILO be started while booting.
Hope this helps,
Julio
